‘Still more to come’ - Jordan Ayew after overtaking Andre as Ghana’s most-capped player

The forward’s 121st cap against Panama carried him past brother André Ayew’s all-time Ghana appearance record and also made him, at 34 years and 280 days, the oldest player ever to represent the Black Stars at a FIFA World Cup.

[p]When [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ayew-jordan/6Nj04peg/"]Jordan Ayew[/a] led the Black Stars out at BMO Field on Wednesday for [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/ghana/nNBjHale/"]Ghana[/a]’s 2026 FIFA World Cup opener against Panama, he made history by becoming Ghana's most capped player.[/p][p]His 121st cap for the senior national team carried him past the previous all-time mark of 120 set by his elder brother and predecessor as Black Stars skipper, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ayew-andre/GrZDpRwB/"]André Ayew[/a].[/p][p]The 34-year-old had drawn level with André in Ghana’s pre-tournament friendly against Wales in Cardiff on June 4. However, as Ghana opened their 2026 World Cup campaign in Toronto, the record became his outright.[/p][infobox id="4ccc1b10-d68f-4c97-bcf4-5e613c17c2e3" /][p]Speaking after ahead of Ghana's second group game against England, Ayew was reluctant to dwell on the milestone.[/p][p]“Of course it's an achievement and everything like that, but, you know, when you're in a big tournament like this, you don't think about all those things. But like I said, I can only thank God. I can only thank my family and, you know, thank the Ghanaians for their support as well."[/p][p]"So there's still more to come and we keep going in the tournament and I'm not really focused about that. The most important thing for me is to focus on the team and make sure that we perform,” he added.[/p][p]The achievement itself sits in a broader and rather poetic family ledger. Father Abedi “Pele” Ayew, the three-time African Footballer of the Year, captained Ghana through multiple AFCON campaigns but never to a senior World Cup.[/p][p]André, the second-born son, led the Black Stars in Qatar 2022 and held the appearance record. Jordan, the youngest of the three Ayew footballing brothers has now inherited both the armband and the record, becoming the first Ghanaian to pass 120 caps and the second Ayew to lead his country at a World Cup.[/p][embed guid="a89df5fe-56ba-44d2-9622-7ccda2ed1d27" url="https://x.com/_owurakuampofo/status/2067567880355328292?s=20" social-type="twitter" /][p]The Panama game also marked his third World Cup appearance, after Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022. With that, he joined a four-man club of Ghanaians who have played at three editions of the tournament: André Ayew, Asamoah Gyan and Sulley Muntari being the others.[/p][p]There was a second record, too. At 34 years and 280 days old at kick-off in Toronto, Ayew became the oldest player ever to represent Ghana in a FIFA World Cup match, surpassing Denis Odoi, who set the previous mark at 34 years and 185 days during the Black Stars’ 3-2 loss to South Korea in Qatar in November 2022.[/p][p]Asked about that second milestone, and about what it means to be leading a Ghana side that is markedly younger than the squads of his early career, Ayew kept it characteristically functional.[/p][p]“Just means I have a different role and you know, I'm trying to execute it as best as I can. And we have a good group and they listen, they try to take advice and, the most important thing is at the end of the day, you have to instill about us performing on the pitch and that's what we care about.”[/p][p]Ayew was Ghana’s top scorer in their World Cup qualifying campaign with seven goals, but is yet to register a goal at the Mundial. Across his three World Cups, Jordan has yet to score for Ghana on football’s biggest stage.[/p][p]With at least two group matches still to play, beginning with [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/england-j9N9ZNFA/ghana-nNBjHale/?mid=KhgvzGjJ"]Tuesday’s blockbuster against England in Foxboro[/a], the chance is still there.[/p][p]For now, though, the records will read his name. A 121st cap. The oldest in Ghana’s World Cup history. A third tournament in red, gold and green. [/p][image alt="Owuraku Ampofo" id="345f5fd0-6a26-4f45-8078-6462582c5da7" credit-line="Flashscore" guid="dbc494b5-88d1-45e2-a1a3-5e0ceb513d7a" original-width="1200" original-height="381" /]
