Mexico ended the curse of the fourth game at the World Cup that started in 1986, whilst France showed their dominance against Sweden, and Norway needed a late Erling Haaland goal to fend off the Ivory Coast as the round of 32 continued.

[p]Flashscore brings you all the best moments from the tournament in our daily World Cup highlights feature. Here's what happened on day 20![/p]
The headlines
[p]The best performance of the day went to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/france/QkGeVG1n/"]France[/a], with the pre-tournament favourites [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/france-QkGeVG1n/sweden-OQyqbHWB/?mid=UN3MMEFl"]enjoying a 3-0 success[/a] over [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/sweden/OQyqbHWB/"]Sweden[/a] in New York/New Jersey.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mbappe-kylian/Wn6E2SED/"]Kylian Mbappe[/a] scored two of the goals, including a lovely combination with [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/olise-michael/E5pvwqkK/"]Michael Olise[/a] for the third. Les Bleus outshot the Swedes 25-8 in what was coach Didier Deschamps' return to the bench following his mother's passing.[/p][image alt="Match Stats" id="ecf44ca1-016e-4579-a1c6-b4249ac629e4" credit-line="Opta by Stats Perform" guid="56264de5-91b1-4a5b-b37a-fcac1946624d" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]Next for France will be [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/paraguay/YaNlqp6j/"]Paraguay[/a], who had caused the massive upset the day before.[/p][p]Earlier in the day, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/haaland-erling/UmV9iQmE/"]Erling Haaland[/a] was Norway's hero as he netted four minutes from time to see the Nordic nation past the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/ivory-coast/G2FRjBgn/"]Ivory Coast[/a] [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/ivory-coast-G2FRjBgn/norway-8rP6JO0H/?mid=tx2IC6G7"]2-1[/a].[/p][p]The Ivorians, who fell behind shortly before the break, created several chances in the second half before finding their leveller through [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/traore-amad/I5Rhq1WL/"]Amad Diallo[/a]. It would not be enough, though, as they failed to mark Haaland on the winning goal, allowing the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/manchester-city/Wtn9Stg0/"]Manchester City[/a] striker to finish from close range.[/p][p]To wrap up the day, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/mexico/O6iHcNkd/"]Mexico[/a] defeated [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/ecuador/8tbm8Tri/"]Ecuador[/a] [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/ecuador-8tbm8Tri/mexico-O6iHcNkd/?mid=fydIxpfR"]2-0 at Estadio Azteca[/a], with first-half goals from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/quinones-julian/dQkfXJPR/"]Julian Quinones[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/jimenez-raul/ENwqg0Pd/"]Raul Jimenez[/a] doing the job.[/p][embed guid="7f3eda12-8c7a-4e25-a7d2-8316f9c15185" url="https://x.com/Flashscorecom/status/2072169045688775005" social-type="twitter" /][p]The match was delayed by an hour due to lightning in the area, but once the game got underway, El Tri carried much of the play.[/p][p]Their reward is a first knockout round win since 1986, as they will find out on Wednesday who they will face next between [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/england/j9N9ZNFA/"]England[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/d-r-congo/phn9mm8H/"]DR Congo[/a].[/p]
Goal of the day
[p]Mbappe's second goal for France against Sweden is easily the best pick here. Some lovely build-up between him and Olise reminds everyone why this French team is so terrifying.[/p][p]The finish from the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/real-madrid/W8mj7MDD/"]Real Madrid[/a] man was excellent - as one would expect - but what makes this goal even better was the pass in by Olise. The [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/bayern-munich/nVp0wiqd/"]Bayern Munich[/a] attacker, who now has five assists in the tournament, split the Swedish defence apart with a delightful ball through to Mbappe. [/p][p]It left keeper [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/zetterstrom-widell/OG2Bcuat/"]Jacob Widell Zetterstrom[/a] without a chance of saving it.[/p][image alt="Kylian Mbappe's second goal against Sweden" id="362b6e18-282f-46c4-aa75-941a2040b630" credit-line="IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters/Vincent Carchietta / Opta by StatsPerform" guid="23062363-faad-453d-bb5f-08e616d5ae4d" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /]
Player of the day
[p]Sticking with Mbappe, he was also the best player on the pitch across the three games. Picking up a 9.4 rating based on Flashscore's player ratings, he was unplayable against Sweden.[/p][p]The Frenchman now has 18 goals in 18 appearances at the World Cup, as he continues to vie with [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/messi-lionel/vgOOdZbd/"]Lionel Messi[/a] for the overall record in the history of the tournament.[/p][p]His all-around game was also inexplicably good on the East Coast.[/p][image alt="Kylian Mbappe's stats against Sweden" id="d6d91605-9dc9-4790-bdc0-33d844a80450" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform / Reuters / Caean Couto" guid="62b63f27-b24b-45f0-ab6d-1e3122dad17d" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]Four key passes to go with his brace show that his teamwork is also on point alongside his vicious threat in front of the goal.[/p][p]If the World Cup wasn't scary enough before this performance, they are now.[/p]
Best of social media
[p]Baseball and football have been mixing across the States this summer. Think of the 'Viking row' at Shea Stadium, or the Scottish fans lighting up Fenway Park.[/p][p]This sole Mexican fan shouting 'gol' at the top of his lungs is another to add to the list of joy this summer.[/p][embed guid="c01709a6-f2ed-47b7-aa71-c12fe582a032" url="https://x.com/MLB/status/2072162724432269403" social-type="twitter" /][infobox id="4ccc1b10-d68f-4c97-bcf4-5e613c17c2e3" /]
