Portugal’s elimination by Spain in the Round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup marked Cristiano Ronaldo’s farewell to the World Cup tournaments. It was a journey of 27 matches and 11 goals, starting in Germany and ending in the United States.

[p]“This will be my last World Cup. I want to enjoy it.” Prophetic words from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ronaldo-cristiano/WGOY4FSt/"]Cristiano Ronaldo[/a], who confirmed before the match against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/spain/bLyo6mco/"]Spain[/a] that this would be his last appearance at the world’s biggest football competition. And so it was.[/p][p]20 years, six editions, 27 matches and 11 goals. That’s CR7’s record, in an odyssey that began in Germany in 2006 and ended in the United States in 2026, with his best result being a semi-final in his first appearance.[/p][p]Flashscore looks back at Ronaldo’s World Cup moments.[/p][p][a href="https://open.spotify.com/episode/3BCfotdFQb0AudIkFh7RGJ?si=loyU8nIwQUWGJj3KUFeHbQ" target="_blank"]Listen to the audio version of this article on Spotify.[/a][/p]
Germany 2006: The first goal
[p]Two years after the heartbreak in Lisbon, where he broke down in tears following the defeat to [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/greece/COuk57Ci/"]Greece[/a] in the Euro 2004 final, Cristiano Ronaldo arrived in Germany to play his first World Cup.[/p][p]Then at [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/manchester-united/ppjDR086/"]Manchester United[/a], the number 17 was already establishing himself as one of the stars on the international stage and was threatening to take over from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/figo-pereira-ribeiro-luis/b1qKltkE/"]Luis Figo[/a] as the team’s main figure.
