All the records that tumbled in Bafana Bafana's thrashing of Eritrea

[p]Star of the show [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mofokeng-relebohile/hx20yWyp/"]Relebohile Mofokeng[/a] scored twice to go with goals from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/yaya-sithole/8QxUv8F5/"]Yaya Sithole[/a], [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/rayners-iqraam/8M2gNoUh/"]Iqraam Rayners[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/singh-luther/z37rCFPO/"]Luther Singh[/a] in an accomplished display from the national side.[/p][p]For a start, it is Bafana Bafana’s biggest-ever victory in an away-designated fixture and their biggest win outside [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/south-africa/W2ijYvlr/"]South Africa[/a], eclipsing previous four-goal margins that included a 5-1 success over [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/eswatini/xW0C2Y47/"]Eswatini[/a] and 4-0 wins against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/gambia/hADVg0uE/"]Gambia[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/namibia/QLENxLuR/"]Namibia[/a].[/p][p]It is their joint-second biggest victory home or away, behind only the 6-0 success against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/seychelles/v5CBuNe8/"]Seychelles[/a] in 2018, which was also in an AFCON qualifier. They have also beaten [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/guatemala/8KhCLQs3/"]Guatemala[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/d-r-congo/phn9mm8H/"]Congo[/a] 5-0, so this is the fourth time in their history they have won by at least five goals.[/p][p]Their seven goals from the opening two qualifiers is their best start to an AFCON preliminary campaign in that regard.[/p][p]It is also the biggest win for Mosimane with the national team. His previous best was a 3-0 victory over [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/burkina-faso/bJOXzWga/"]Burkina Faso[/a] in a friendly in 2011.[/p][image alt="Match statistics" id="808acd3d-2c05-43f3-b8c1-1ff8798466c7" credit-line="Flashscore" guid="34bfc8df-9829-4f4b-9991-f310408c8495" original-width="2160" original-height="2700" /][p]It is the first time Bafana Bafana have won their opening two AFCON qualifiers since 2000, and only the third time in their history.[/p][p]On that occasion 26 years ago, they defeated Congo 2-1 away and then [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/liberia/UZzaxY9t/"]Liberia[/a] by the same scoreline at home. They had also opened the 1994 qualifying campaign with 1-0 victories over [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/madagascar/88OzY9OB/"]Madagascar[/a] away and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/mauritius/tpBfGJ31/"]Mauritius[/a] at home.[/p][p]Both those sequences ended with draws in the third qualifier, so Bafana have never won their opening three matches of an AFCON qualifying campaign.[/p][p]Singh’s goal came after a gap of five years, 11 months and 22 days from his previous Bafana goal, but that is not the longest for the side.[/p][p]That mark is held by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/kutumela-thabiso/hOuOPokI/"]Thabiso Kutumela[/a], who scored in South Africa's 3-2 COSAFA Cup final win over [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/botswana/naNvXTwI/"]Botswana[/a] on June 25, 2016, then did not score again until the 1-1 draw with [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/algeria/nc87N1BR/"]Algeria[/a] at the CHAN on August 8, 2025, an incredible gap of nine years, one month and 14 days.[/p][image alt="Match momentum" id="793d9eec-f034-4280-82a9-45897d857fbf" credit-line="Flashscore" guid="a063cb0f-f291-4692-b5a5-4b5a4c25ac90" original-width="2160" original-height="2700" /][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mashego-katlego/0QMHpLri/"]Katlego Mashego[/a] also had a gap of six years, nine months and 23 days between Bafana goals, making Singh third on the list.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/appollis-oswin/6e9QI2W6/"]Oswin Appollis[/a]’ three assists is the first time Bafana have had that number in a match since the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/orlando-pirates/p4SF9EMI/"]Orlando Pirates[/a] winger also provided three assists in the 5-0 win over Congo in 2024.[/p][p]He could claim to have had four assists in this one as it was his shot that was parried by the goalkeeper and provided a tap-in for Sithole, though football statistics do not allow for that.[/p][p]Bafana’s next qualifiers are home and away against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/kenya/CIAJw1QK/"]Kenya[/a] in November, though they have a friendly clash against [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/egypt/bejDn7NN/"]Egypt[/a] on Sunday.[/p][p] [/p][infobox id="584d9683-f419-4696-8cb3-c155213092a0" /]
