Chelsea legend Azpilicueta announces retirement: 'I found it hard to write this letter'

Former Chelsea defender César Azpilicueta has announced he will retire from football this season.

[p]Sevilla defender [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/azpilicueta-cesar/CMGUADgt/"]Azpilicueta[/a] has announced he will hang up his boots in an emotional statement as he calls time on his lengthy playing career. [/p][p]The 36 year old sent a message to supporters on Friday morning, confirming the news that this season will be his last. [/p][p][b]“Dear football, Today, I want to share with you that this season will be my last as a professional footballer. After so many years living my dream, I feel it’s time to start a new chapter in my life. [/b][/p][p]“Being honest, even though I have been preparing myself for this moment, I found it hard to write this letter.  After 20 seasons , many people have played an important role in my career. [/p][embed guid="a1ec3e12-a004-41ba-beba-5a8b21cd8b01" url="https://x.com/CesarAzpi/status/2057736913407144026?s=20" social-type="twitter" /][p]“When I first kicked a ball as a child in Pamplona with my schoolmates, I never imagined the amazing journey ahead. I’m grateful for every moment: the wins, the tough losses, the challenges, and most of all, the people I’ve met and the friendships I’ve made along the way.” [/p][p][b]He went on to say: “Football has given me so much: it has taught me values like teamwork, sacrifice, humility, and respect. [/b][/p][p][b]“It has granted me the opportunity to explore new countries, new cultures, and new languages. My heart is full of gratitude and memories I will carry with me into whatever comes next. With love, César.” [/b][/p][p]Making over 500 appearances and winning nine major honours in his 11 years at Stamford Bridge, the Spaniard established himself as a legend in West London and he will not be forgotten by supporters. [/p]
