Ten-man Sunderland suffered a fresh setback in their European qualification bid as they were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in their Premier League (PL) meeting with already-relegated Wolverhampton Wanderers, who made it eight consecutive H2H home games without defeat.

[p]After conceding nine goals across back-to-back losses, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/sunderland/WSzc94ws/"]Sunderland[/a] managed to restore some confidence with an early opener at Molineux.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/wolves/j3Azpf5d/"]Wolves[/a]’ set-piece defending left a lot to be desired as [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mukiele-nordi/MoObMvb7/"]Nordi Mukiele[/a] rose high at the back post to steer the ball in from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/xhaka-granit/QBHCDKff/"]Granit Xhaka[/a]’s inswinging corner.[/p][p]However, Sunderland’s celebratory mood soon turned to one of frustration when referee Paul Tierney, after consultation with the pitch-side monitor, gave [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ballard-daniel/b7is4eSG/"]Dan Ballard[/a] his marching orders in the 24th minute for pulling the hair of forward [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/arokodare-toluwalase/4IsrUYg1/"]Tolu Arokodare[/a] - the defender’s first red card since being dismissed for [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/blackpool/8EFIJthC/"]Blackpool[/a] in October 2020. [/p][image alt="Momentum" id="56688ba5-a1b1-4d97-866e-e2ab25fab71e" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform" guid="0091bb6e-18a3-4629-8b38-b9fafdc48d0d" original-width="1920" original-height="1080" /][p]The depleted visitors managed to get through to the break unscathed, but they could not stop their hosts from pulling level inside the opening 10 minutes of the restart with a near-carbon copy of Sunderland’s opener.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/bueno-hugo/0EjILYmN/"]Hugo Bueno[/a]’s deep corner found the towering [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/bueno-santiago/2y6924gn/"]Santiago Bueno[/a], who guided his downward header in at the far post to net his third PL goal of the season.[/p][p]Knowing a point would do little for their European aspirations, Sunderland showed great determination to push forward in a bid to restore their advantage, despite being a man light. [/p][p]Xhaka threatened with an effort from outside the box that fizzed past [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/bentley-daniel/SWSRDdEf/"]Dan Bentley[/a]’s left post in what proved to be one of the last meaningful chances of the contest. [/p][p]Regis Le Bris’s charges ultimately had to settle for a draw that leaves them in 12th spot and three points adrift of the top seven with just three games left to play.[/p][p]As for Wolves, they ended a run of three consecutive defeats, but Roefs’ late save from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/armstrong-adam/djcqZvPg/"]Adam Armstrong[/a]’s powerful header denied them their first win since the start of March. [/p][p]Flashscore Man of the Match: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mukiele-nordi/MoObMvb7/"]Nordi Mukiele[/a] ([a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/sunderland/WSzc94ws/"]Sunderland[/a])[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/sunderland-WSzc94ws/wolves-j3Azpf5d/?mid=xjaHTvlL"]Catch up on the match here.[/a][/p][image alt="Key match stats" id="f2b93786-04aa-4dda-8994-cf689e891020" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform" guid="3a3b4aea-0840-4fd2-8af9-f1c844c40a43" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /]
Key stats
[p]- Sunderland have failed to win their last three games in the Premier League; their last longer winless streak was from 7th February 2026 to 28th February 2026, a run of four games[/p][p]- Granit Xhaka has assisted six goals in the Premier League this season (1 in this game), more than any other Sunderland player[/p][p]- Wolves attempted 20 shots in this game, their highest total in a single match in the Premier League this season[/p]
