Two of the giant killers of 2026 meet in this tasty Australia Cup semi-final with a meeting against Melbourne Victory on October 10 up for grabs.
Match News and Current Form
[p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/south-melbourne/6ciKPSEO/"]South Melbourne[/a] are making their third semi-finals appearance at this tournament after losing to Sydney FC (5-1, 2017) and Macarthur FC (1-0, 2024) in their previous two and have had to work immensely hard to get here, recording come-from-behind 2-1 wins over both Adelaide United (home) and Preston Lions (away) either side of defeating NPL WA club Fremantle City on penalties when they turned a 2-0 lead into a 2-3 deficit. [/p][p]They bring sketchy form into this fixture, losing three of their last four league games to miss out on the NPL Victoria final at the weekend, whilst their only two clean sheets from their last ten competitive fixtures were against NPL Victoria bottom-half pairing Melbourne City (W 3-0) and St Albans Dinamo (W 2-0). At a time when they’re [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/news/soccer-a-league-south-melbourne-aggressively-pursuing-western-united-s-cancelled-licence/K6l7p8sg/"]making a serious bid to take over Western United’s A-League licence[/a], the biggest on-field statement they could possibly make is to add an Australia Cup to their 2025 Australian Championship trophy and do so by conquering Melbourne’s foundation A-League club in the final.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/queensland-lions/rZJ589gJ/"]Queensland Lions[/a] already know a thing or two about besting A-League opposition. This year, they joined the likes of Sydney United 58 (2022) and Heidelberg United (2025) by eliminating more than one A-League club from a single Australia Cup, getting past Perth Glory on penalties in the Round of 32 before recording clean sheet victories at home to a sluggish Melbourne City (2-0) and third-tier North Sunshine Eagles (4-0). [/p][p]This will be their 11th Australia Cup match in history and just their third interstate, with Lions on opposite ends of 4-1 results when losing to Melbourne Knights in 2023 and defeating Perth RedStar in 2024, both in the Round of 32. But the immense winning form is indisputable: Lions are on a 12-game winning streak across all competitions that saw them win the NPL Queensland final over Peninsula Power (1-0), the Kappa State Cup (also 1-0 over Power) and their two most recent Australia Cup games. With that in addition to the Kappa Pro Series and NPL Premiership, they’ve already added four trophies to their cabinet in 2026. Write them off at your own peril![/p]
Head-to-Head History
[p]This will be the inaugural H2H. South Melbourne are unbeaten against Queensland sides in the Australia Cup (Gold Coast City 2017, Olympic FC 2024), whilst Lions have a 2-1 record against Victorian clubs including Melbourne City. [/p][image alt="Win Probability" id="e1cdcc10-36f2-44da-ab37-fd2edfa100e3" guid="4a3a45ac-cca8-4d35-adbf-be156477cfed" original-width="1920" original-height="1080" /]
Hot Stats and Streaks
[p]South Melbourne’s last five competitive games were decided by a one-goal margin.[/p][p]South Melbourne did not keep a clean sheet in any of their last eight Australia Cup matches.[/p][p]Lions kept a clean sheet in five of their last six competitive matches (including State Cup). [/p][p]Seven of the Lions' ten Australia Cup matches produced over 3.5 total goals.[/p]
Key Players to Watch
[p]South Melbourne’s [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/cocks-arran/zc9t7EGF/"]Arran Cocks[/a] was heroic against both Fremantle City and Preston, opening the scoring in the former and then delivering the match-winner in the latter. NPL veteran [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/hore-mitchell/A3Sv6z92/"]Mitchell Hore[/a] has scored in four of his last six Australia Cup matches (Round of 32 onwards) for either Melbourne Knights or Lions FC, striking in the wins over Melbourne City and North Sunshine Eagles.[/p]
Betting Analysis
[p]The odds are grossly underestimating Lions FC and we are forecasting [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/queensland-lions-rZJ589gJ/south-melbourne-6ciKPSEO/odds/?mid=CE7v7qpp"]under 2.5 goals[/a] and a [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/queensland-lions-rZJ589gJ/south-melbourne-6ciKPSEO/odds/?mid=CE7v7qpp"]90-minute FT draw[/a], meaning the game will go to extra time. [/p][infobox id="d39bc573-b9dd-4b87-acb9-2de1f22d36c7" /]
