In the 159th edition of the Tyne-Wear derby, Sunderland came from behind to beat Newcastle United 2-1 in the Premier League (PL), extending the Magpies’ fixture-high tally of winless league H2Hs to 11 matches while the Black Cats also usurp them in the league table.

[p]In a derby that means so much to both clubs, there was a tetchiness from the very beginning. [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/newcastle-utd/p6ahwuwJ/"]Newcastle[/a] were the ones to show the most early intent, though, as [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/elanga-anthony/dOlRWlZ6/"]Anthony Elanga[/a] headed over from a [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/hall-lewis/rJOyDa3N/"]Lewis Hall[/a] cross.[/p][p]Having already blocked an attempted clearance from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ellborg-melker/fLFMhsis/"]Melker Ellborg[/a], [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/gordon-anthony/EFo95m2P/"]Anthony Gordon[/a] punished [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/woltemade-nick/4YDUd1at/"]Luke O’Nien after his pass was cut out by Nick Woltemade[/a], putting the hosts ahead with a composed finish just 10 minutes into proceedings, and perhaps also offering a form of redemption for Woltemade after his own goal decided the reverse fixture.[/p][p]Ironic cheers rang out around St James’ Park as [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/xhaka-granit/QBHCDKff/"]Granit Xhaka[/a]’s subsequent attempt ballooned high and wide, but [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/talbi-chemsdine/Ayswm5ri/"]Chemsdine Talbi[/a] caused much more concern with a curling effort from outside the box that [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ramsdale-aaron/dnohA1sG/"]Aaron Ramsdale[/a] did well to claw away.[/p][p]The Magpies continued to make moves forward of their own, with Elanga being played through by Woltemade and working space for a shooting opportunity, but ultimately firing into the side netting.[/p][p]Woltemade then saw an instinctive shot blocked by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/geertruida-lutsharel/zwx6dFjk/"]Lutsharel Geertruida[/a] before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/botman-sven/nRvavHmI/"]Sven Botman[/a] headed a Hall cross against the post.[/p][image alt="Match stats" id="459f9253-3248-4619-8f5a-bd3af89b0280" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform" guid="6820cb07-2e47-4fcd-9c6b-4a3484cc8444" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]The hosts suffered a blow early in the second half when Botman was forced off following a boot to the head from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/brobbey-brian/pfAvgQUT/"]Brian Brobbey[/a], and that disappointment was compounded within three minutes.[/p][p]Ramsdale palmed [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/rigg-chris/lUGYPTIg/"]Chris Rigg[/a]’s shot behind, and Newcastle couldn’t deal with the ensuing corner as Burn denied [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/diarra-habib/nFakLd1E/"]Habib Diarra[/a], only for the ball to fall invitingly for Talbi to convert.[/p][p]Xhaka then hit an ambitious strike that looped off [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ramsey-jacob/URZH6b4K/"]Jacob Ramsey[/a] on its way towards the roof of the net, before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/murphy-jacob/b5WYEjtm/"]Jacob Murphy[/a] worked Ellborg shortly after coming on as part of an [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/howe-eddie/hbOpz9hE/"]Eddie Howe[/a] triple change.[/p][p]Ramsdale was worked again as he parried [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/sadiki-noah/UJnCIUV6/"]Noah Sadiki[/a]’s shot, and the tension rose as Geertruida deflected [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/barnes-harvey/Wjj9WTTi/"]Harvey Barnes[/a]’ attempt behind at one end before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/thiaw-malick/0vSsR1xI/"]Malick Thiaw[/a] blocked Brobbey’s attempt at the other.[/p][p]Thiaw appeared to have made his mark with a header at the other end with a quarter-hour remaining, but the goal was ruled out for an offside infringement.[/p][p]Gordon then blazed two shots harmlessly over, opening the door for [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/sunderland/WSzc94ws/"]Sunderland[/a] to strike a 90th-minute winner when [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/le-fee-enzo/hC5yfF2A/"]Enzo Le Fée[/a] found Brobbey, who saw one shot saved, then converted the rebound.[/p][p]That dramatic late goal earned Sunderland their first win in three matches across all competitions, taking the Black Cats a point above Newcastle in the PL table, with the Magpies’ back-to-back defeats coming in very different but equally demoralising ways.[/p][image alt="Momentum" id="d257e944-642f-4a64-a718-ed1f20436fd2" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform" guid="1d0e1944-cb48-4a63-9e13-f65d76735154" original-width="1920" original-height="1080" /][p]Flashscore Man of the Match: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/brobbey-brian/pfAvgQUT/"]Brian Brobbey[/a] ([a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/sunderland/WSzc94ws/"]Sunderland[/a])[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/newcastle-p6ahwuwJ/sunderland-WSzc94ws/?mid=fBXzEJVp"]Get all the match stats here with Flashscore[/a][/p]
