Flashscore were at Brazil's dramatic 2-1 win over Japan in the first knockout round of the World Cup, and kept a close eye on how Carlo Ancelotti experienced it throughout.

[p]The first knockout match of this World Cup for[a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ancelotti-carlo/nZQG5IgJ/"] Ancelotti[/a] was anything but a walk in the park.[/p][p]It was always going to be nervy: after all, it's the most important football competition in the world, and the highly decorated coach is a debutant in it. His attitude, however, remains the same for all ninety minutes plus stoppage time. Never flustered, almost always standing stoically. In short, the usual [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ancelotti-carlo/nZQG5IgJ/"]Ancelotti[/a], even with so much at stake.[/p][p]In the press conference, the Italian coach appeared, as always, approachable and smiling. This time though, his face was noticeably more tense.[/p][p]He greeted the crowd cheering for him as soon as he stepped onto the pitch, just before the teams' walkout. National anthems, and then it was time: the long-awaited knockout stage began.[/p]
Signs of nerves
[p]After just a few minutes, Ancelotti is already on his feet watching his players.[/p][p]In the 12th minute comes the first jolt. A foul on [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/vinicius-junior/CbwQ4Mws/"]Vinicius[/a] makes him lose his cool: the fourth official is just steps away, and Ancelotti immediately demands an explanation for the missing yellow card.[/p][p]Minutes go by and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/brazil/I9l9aqLq/"]Brazil[/a] aren't playing as their coach would like. He calls [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/matheus-cunha/bq5QzRdb/"]Matheus Cunha[/a] over, urging him to drop between the lines to avoid giving reference points and to help the wingers break through.[/p][p]Around the 20th minute, he slaps his hands on his thighs: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/casemiro/Ukeq3c0b/"]Casemiro[/a] gives away a free kick and gets booked, while Brazil's build-up remains slow. Together with his staff, he tries to make himself heard, but the ball keeps moving too slowly.[/p][p]At the 30th minute comes the result. Brazil mess up in the build-up and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/sano-kaishu/v13GHQFg/"]Kaishu Sano[/a] takes advantage, beating [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/alisson/UZrQ3bwP/"]Alisson[/a]. Ancelotti doesn't flinch. He looks at his players and, with a gesture, seems to say: "Let's get going again right away, nothing happened."[/p][p]But Brazil keep struggling. They can't find space, can't create chances. Ancelotti alternates between standing and sitting on the bench, never stopping in his issuing of instructions.[/p][p]The second half doesn't start well. Brazil are still tense and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/danilo/KUjvgUhB/"]Danilo[/a] picks up a yellow card. The Italian coach looks more and more impatient.[/p][image alt="Ancelotti nervous" id="93f48bb9-ed9b-4678-b763-cc66cbd3703d" credit-line="REUTERS/Annegret Hilse" guid="7fb5620d-8b62-487f-8a59-8137716fb993" original-width="3210" original-height="2247" /]
Composure throughout the comeback
[p]Around the 50th minute, though, something changes. The Selecao take control of the match and pin [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/japan/ULXPdOUj/"]Japan[/a] back.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/suzuki-zion/4bDDVvmT/"]Suzuki[/a] saves from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/bruno-guimaraes/xtyKanzU/"]Bruno Guimaraes[/a] and Ancelotti watches, almost in disbelief.[/p][p]A minute later, the entire Brazilian bench has their hands on their heads after an incredible goal-line clearance following a close-range header from Casemiro. The boss remains almost impassive, allowing himself only a brief exchange with the fourth official, probably to ask for clarification about a possible Japanese foul in the box.[/p][p]The equaliser, though, is in the air, and it comes in the 57th minute. Casemiro gives new hope to the South Americans with a close-range header.[/p][p]Ancelotti watches his team's celebrations with composure. Then he sends an assistant to talk to Vinicius and, before play resumes, steps a few meters onto the pitch to call Danilo over. A quick word to redefine tactical instructions.[/p][p]A minute later, even the Italian coach's composure wavers. Vinicius produces one of his trademark bursts, beats everyone, but hits the post. The celebration is stuck in the throat even for the coach from Reggiolo.[/p][p]Time ticks away and Ancelotti watches his team with arms folded and a tense face. Six minutes of stoppage time, though, are enough to break the spell.[/p][image alt="Matheus Cunha hugs Martinelli" id="7717c392-35a5-4b86-9037-33986c5234a5" credit-line="REUTERS/Phil Noble" guid="21e6acae-ed36-45a8-b0f1-8c71aed0fbc3" original-width="2528" original-height="1709" /][p]In the 95th minute comes the goal that sets all of Brazil off in celebration. Everyone, except Ancelotti. The coach keeps his usual composure, stays near the bench and with a gesture tells his players to stay calm, while his staff gather around him to sort out the final details.[/p][p]In reality, there is little left to decide. Moments later, the final whistle blows: Ancelotti can finally breathe a sigh of relief and enjoy his first knockout win on the Brazil bench.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/brazil-I9l9aqLq/japan-ULXPdOUj/?mid=f7ENGzPc"]Click here for more on the match[/a][/p][infobox id="4ccc1b10-d68f-4c97-bcf4-5e613c17c2e3" /]
