Switzerland topped Group B at the FIFA World Cup (WC) and progressed from a fourth WC Group Stage in succession for the first time, following a 2-1 win in Vancouver over Canada, who still advanced to a maiden knockout stage in their history.

[p]Both sides knew before kick-off that a stalemate would be enough to reach the Round of 32, but [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/switzerland/rHJ2vy1B/"]Switzerland[/a] had to win to steal first place in the group.[/p][p]Following a cagey opening 10 minutes, the Swiss generated the first chance when [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/embolo-breel/CpKkPKuP/"]Breel Embolo[/a] was played through, but [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/crepeau-maxime/bTqrxMoS/"]Maxime Crepeau[/a] made himself big to deny the forward, before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/manzambi-johan/pIqmcnKc/"]Johan Manzambi[/a]’s rebound was expertly blocked by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/cornelius-derek/Wvb8v5p5/"]Derek Cornelius[/a].[/p][p]Crepeau’s opposite number, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/kobel-gregor/xlBg2ttC/"]Gregor Kobel[/a], had a confidence boost of his own when denying [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/larin-cyle/vNpXFtuQ/"]Cyle Larin[/a] when one-on-one, even if the flag for offside eventually went up, and then neither goalkeeper was overly stretched by tame efforts from Embolo and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/de-fougerolles-luc/juAwWhAL/"]Luc de Fougerolles[/a].[/p][p]The first-half hydration break did nothing to help either side gain a foothold, but an altercation between Larin and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/xhaka-granit/QBHCDKff/"]Granit Xhaka[/a] with just over 30 minutes played seemed to spur on the Canadian striker, who soon tested Kobel with a curling effort.[/p][p]It was then Xhaka’s turn to try his luck with a free-kick, but [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/canada/x4toKORL/"]Canada[/a] finished the half the stronger, working the ball across well to the left, where [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/ahmed-ali/zP3uNOEs/"]Ali Ahmed[/a] lacked the power to beat Kobel at his near post, before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/david-jonathan/CSvtXj2E/"]Jonathan David[/a] carved out shooting space at the edge of the area, but fired wide.[/p][p]A match that failed to ignite for 45 minutes came alive just 40 seconds into the second half, as Switzerland worked the ball down their right side. The move allowed Manzambi to deliver a low cross, which missed everyone bar [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/vargas-ruben/U7XUxOei/"]Ruben Vargas[/a], who drilled the ball into the bottom corner at the back post.[/p][image alt="Vargas' goal" id="aa3b08f6-b832-4ccf-94b1-d9bd127ec387" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform (ČTK / AP / Abbie Parr)" guid="e64a1a4b-3708-46d8-9ebc-258056251c1a" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]Eleven minutes later, there was clear daylight between the two, when a long ball over the top was missed by two Canucks defenders, allowing Embolo to hold the ball up for the arriving Manzambi, whose shot squeezed under Crepeau for his third goal of the tournament.[/p][p]Jesse Marsch made a trio of changes to spark a recovery from his side, and Canada were soon on top, but a David strike well blocked by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/elvedi-nico/fZO9OHIM/"]Nico Elvedi[/a] was the best chance before the second cooling break with 19 minutes left.[/p][p]Following the stoppage, Marsch decided one David wasn’t enough, and threw [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/emmanuel-promise/Qq9Rs2nK/"]Promise David[/a] into his attack. The gamble paid off, as Les Rouges were back in it within seconds, when a long ball over the top was controlled delightfully by [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/saliba-nathan/ALAGXH2B/"]Nathan Saliba[/a], who lofted the ball across the box for the new man to volley in on the stretch.[/p][p]The co-hosts put Murat Yakin’s side under late pressure, but [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/tani-oluwaseyi/nLnBWjlN/"]Tani Oluwaseyi[/a] heading wide and Promise David heading straight at Kobel meant Nati held on and are now unbeaten in 17 of their last 19 Group Stage fixtures at major tournaments.[/p][p]Canada finish second above [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/bosnia-herzegovina/fqe7WYTr/"]Bosnia & Herzegovina[/a] on goal difference, but lose home advantage for their Round of 32 tie. [/p][p]Flashscore Man of the Match: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/kobel-gregor/xlBg2ttC/"]Gregor Kobel[/a] ([a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/switzerland/rHJ2vy1B/"]Switzerland[/a])[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/canada-x4toKORL/switzerland-rHJ2vy1B/?mid=2wQjwkpp"]Click here for more on the match[/a][/p][image alt="Match momentum" id="c134c935-4855-45d3-b9c4-7bb2f989a0f5" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform" guid="58bec7d9-7cf5-4055-a49c-5705f1a082b1" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /]
