Tuesday night's fixture between Brighton and Hove Albion and Chelsea was vital for both clubs with regard to their European ambitions.

The Blues simply didn't have a clue.[/p][image alt="Brighton v Chelsea - Player ratings" id="27426f5f-c31a-4cda-81c1-465c2541e5ce" credit-line="Flashscore" guid="4ac3d1d3-0656-4836-9226-62945cceee57" original-width="1200" original-height="1200" /][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/chalobah-trevoh/2N61AJte/"]Trevoh Chalobah[/a] was at least winning all of his one-on-ones both on the ground and aerially, and would also have Chelsea's first attempt of any description in the 41st minute.[/p][p]With over 40% of the action in the visitors' defensive third of the pitch as the match approached half-time, Rosenior needed his staff to pass themselves out of trouble. However, on the night, this part of their game was also well below par.[/p]
Different half, same story
[p]Just 83% completion from the normally ultra-reliable [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/fernandez-enzo/nZnbEVWP/"]Enzo Fernandez[/a] stood out, whilst no shots or touches in the Brighton box from a player who loves to get forward posed further questions for Rosenior to answer.[/p][p]Clearly, then, a rousing half-time team talk was necessary in order for the visitors to get back in the game, but just 10 minutes after the break, Chelsea were further behind.[/p][embed guid="88128a8e-04f3-4106-91f0-3269d39cfc72" url="https://x.com/OfficialBHAFC/status/2046865443013398555" social-type="twitter" /][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/hinshelwood-jack/0IBtygvF/"]Jack Hinshelwood[/a] ensured it would be a long way back for the visitors, who had at least seen 66% of the ball in the opening stages of the second half.[/p][p]That dominance of possession was brief, however, and before long, the game settled back into a familiar pattern.[/p]
Welbeck completes Blues' misery
[p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/lavia-romeo/UepSPHBj/"]Romeo Lavia[/a] and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/caicedo-moises/tIqaAkDs/"]Moises Caicedo[/a] were doing their best to break up play, something that they did semi-successfully on 10 occasions between them, but they were let down by colleagues who were allowing Brighton to play around them with relative ease.[/p][p]Before [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/welbeck-danny/86PvpO11/"]Danny Welbeck[/a] scored an injury-time third to complete Chelsea's misery, the hosts had seen 14 shots at goal, of which nine were on target.[/p][embed guid="0cd7081a-0444-436c-8fa8-507030fa2693" url="https://x.com/OfficialBHAFC/status/2046693580073259453" social-type="twitter" /][p]Compare that to the West Londoners, who didn't manage a single shot on target, and just six in total on the night, three of which were from substitutes, one from a defender and two from midfield.[/p][p]Taking away [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/garnacho-alejandro/jqrfFKsi/"]Alejandro Garnacho[/a]'s six touches in the Brighton box after coming on, the rest of the team managed only a further nine touches in the area collectively.[/p]
Only three tackles won all night
[p]Chelsea's problems weren't restricted to a lack of output in attack either, given that only those three aforementioned tackles were won all night, and two of those were from Hato. [/p][p]Substitute [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/essugo-dario/djA5LwVQ/"]Dario Essugo[/a] was the only other player to win a tackle, and that's one of the most damning indictments of where the Blues find themselves at present.[/p][p]The match represented the first time that Chelsea had failed to have a shot on target in a game since they faced Brighton in February 2025.[/p][image alt="Brighton v Chelsea - Match Stats" id="a5f06cd4-3f8e-4331-9e43-6b9a34f98928" credit-line="Opta by Stats Perform" guid="329bb6d7-9803-4221-a5f3-310b358fd292" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]They'd also failed to score in their last five games in the Premier League, a run of 542 minutes without a goal, and the longest they've gone without scoring in a league game since 1912.[/p][p]This current run is Chelsea's worst since six games without a win between October and November 1993, too.[/p][p]No goals, no fight... no hope?[/p][image alt="Jason Pettigrove" id="7c946b83-45ef-4957-a0d0-08a2df8d04df" credit-line="Flashscore" guid="4c5205c2-a5cc-4fb2-9742-f5c4b78ed7e2" original-width="1200" original-height="380" /]
