The opening atmosphere of the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals had everything you would expect from an event of this magnitude: celebrities in the stands, a party in the bleachers, and the high-level football that crowns the favourites.

[p]In a clash that brought together the spectacle of entertainment and the pure passion of football, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/france/QkGeVG1n/"]France[/a] overcame the pressure from the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/morocco/IDKYO3R8/"]Morocco[/a] fans, kept their composure after [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/mbappe-kylian/Wn6E2SED/"]Mbappe[/a] missed a penalty in the first half, and sealed their spot in the semifinals with a dominant second-half victory.[/p][p]Anyone entering the stadium would have thought Morocco was playing at home. In the majority, the Moroccan fans put on a show of their own: they turned the stands into a cauldron of drums, powerful chants - including a moving rendition of the national anthem - and boos every time France had possession.[/p][image alt="Shakira caught on camera at Gillette Stadium" id="eed5ea69-ad59-4fa4-856c-4b66c261a487" credit-line="CazéTV/Reprodução" guid="d2f62f65-4ce5-4c64-9634-e8adef5cc1e7" original-width="1320" original-height="729" /][p]On the other side, the French had strong “local support.” The American crowd, drawn by the star power of Kylian Mbappé and [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/dembele-ousmane/zsMC2Ec0/"]Ousmane Dembele[/a], leaned toward the current favorites for the title.[/p][p]This gala atmosphere was also reflected in the VIP boxes, which featured big names from sports and entertainment, such as singer Shakira, basketball star [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/brown-jaylen/l88NjhUb/"]Jaylen Brown[/a] - who shook up the NBA market after his recent trade to the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/philadelphia-76ers/vwRW2QSh/"]Philadelphia 76ers[/a] - as well as goalkeeper [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/turner-matt/KbZtv1W8/"]Matt Turner[/a] of the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/usa/fuitL4CF/"]United States[/a] national team, and French idol [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/griezmann-antoine/OxCa1jdT/"]Antoine Griezmann[/a], who was cheered by the crowd. [/p][embed guid="ff060be2-b9ab-483b-8c5f-216bed9a1bc8" url="https://x.com/FabrizioRomano/status/2075343525772689524" social-type="twitter" /]
Mbappé’s mistake
[p]The first half was technically poor, bogged down by Morocco’s strategy of closing down spaces and the clear electricity coming from the stands. The peak of the African celebration came when Mbappe, one of the tournament’s biggest stars, missed a penalty.[/p][p]The Moroccan fans’ explosion of joy echoed throughout the stadium, creating the sense that an upset could be on the cards in the quarterfinals. The strength of the stands, however, ran up against the reality on the pitch.[/p][image alt="Moroccan fans celebrated, but didn’t smile at the final whistle" id="2f596c8b-0416-4cf4-8389-8405344c04de" credit-line="ODD ANDERSEN / AFP" guid="01939683-4817-4d0d-8d32-ab00f85bc8da" original-width="6000" original-height="4000" /]
The weight of being the favorite
[p]In the second half, football’s hierarchy prevailed. France came out of the locker room with the game under control, dictating the tempo, valuing possession, and cooling Morocco’s momentum.[/p][p]As the French midfield began to find space, Morocco’s resistance was worn down. With authority and remarkable composure, the French team built their lead, silenced the Moroccan celebrations, and confirmed their status as the team to beat at this World Cup. [/p][image alt="French fans celebrated in Boston" id="801bae43-ea78-4f2c-b3cb-3a4923176afe" credit-line="ANGELA WEISS / AFP" guid="a136d95b-063a-4807-bddf-fcb47ad378ea" original-width="7600" original-height="5066" /]
