Leeds beat Burnley to go nine clear of Tottenham & all but seal Premier League safety

Leeds United heaped yet more misery on an already-relegated Burnley, with their 3-1 victory over the Clarets all but securing their Premier League (PL) safety.

[p]With relegation already confirmed, [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/burnley/z3dmTMMO/"]Burnley[/a] were playing to salvage some pride, but their start looked nothing like that of a side looking to save face.[/p][p]The Clarets were on the back foot from the get-go and duly fell behind in poor fashion when Anton Stach’s effort from distance looked tame, but it somehow beat [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/dubravka-martin/dp3dkdsI/"]Martin Dubravka[/a] at his near post and put [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/manchester-united/ppjDR086/"]Leeds[/a] in front.[/p][p]Stach was involved soon after as the [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/leeds/tUxUbLR2/"]Whites[/a] almost made it two, as this time he elected to tee up [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/tanaka-ao/4lYAoXQu/"]Ao Tanaka[/a], who blazed over the bar, and he ought to have seen his misery compounded moments later when he slipped in his own area, only for [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/anthony-jaidon/EHAUhN9R/"]Jaidon Anthony[/a] to let him off the hook.[/p][p]It felt like the only way Burnley were going to get into the game was through a Leeds error, and although they did end up growing into the half, they never once looked like threatening [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/darlow-karl/tCXYzajG/"]Karl Darlow[/a]’s goal.[/p][p]Mike Jackson’s men were at sixes and sevens in the first half, which ended without them having a single shot on target. The lowest xG ever recorded in the PL is 0.02, and with Burnley’s sitting at 0.05 at the break, that was a slice of unwanted history they barely managed to avoid in an otherwise dour half of football.[/p][image alt="Key stats" id="1d070491-1770-46dd-911d-d91c5e4cd2f8" credit-line="Opta by StatsPerform" guid="ce58d71c-58bb-485e-b0b3-47c5934c488b" original-width="1080" original-height="1080" /][p]Such lacklustre attacking form meant a second Leeds goal was always likely to end the game as a contest, and that duly arrived within 10 minutes of the restart.[/p][p]Leeds flew out of the traps in the second half, and a sweeping move ended with [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/bogle-jayden/xAdjsHZG/"]Jayden Bogle[/a] planting a perfect cross onto the boot of [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/okafor-noah/EDhpumvd/"]Noah Okafor[/a], who directed back across goal and into the corner.[/p][p]A swift third goal placed the game beyond any reasonable doubt, with Tanaka’s wicked drive from distance fumbled into the path of [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/calvert-lewin-dominic/0WmBe6U2/"]Dominic Calvert-Lewin[/a], who managed to bundle the ball over the line from inside the six-yard box. [/p][p]Burnley did at least show some character to get back into the game, having a goal disallowed from [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/lucas-pires/tUnyqGA3/"]Lucas Pires[/a], who bundled home after [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/humphreys-bashir/GbdwrD99/"]Bashir Humphreys[/a]’ initial effort was saved.[/p][p][a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/tchaouna-loum/vij66lN7/"]Loum Tchaouna[/a] then finally got one that counted when he hammered home from inside the area.[/p][p]That didn’t serve as anything more than a consolation, as the night belonged to a Leeds side who moved nine points clear of the drop zone and to almost definite safety with just three games remaining. [/p][p]Flashscore Man of the Match: [a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/player/stach-anton/h8i6ur8L/"]Anton Stach[/a] ([a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/team/leeds/tUxUbLR2/"]Leeds[/a])[/p][embed guid="1d5e71c5-66ba-4542-b236-abc8401d134c" url="https://x.com/LUFC/status/2050318586204323896?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet" social-type="twitter" /]
Key stats
[p]- Leeds have scored 24 first-half goals in 35 games; only Manchester City (37) and Arsenal (25) have scored more in the Premier League this season.[/p][p]- Dominic Calvert-Lewin has now scored 12 goals in the Premier League this season, more than any other Leeds player.[/p][p]- Loum Tchaouna has now scored two goals in two appearances in the Premier League against Leeds.[/p]
[a href="https://www.flashscore.ca/game/soccer/burnley-z3dmTMMO/leeds-tUxUbLR2/?mid=EBUD9Jdk"]Catch up on all the match stats with Flashscore here[/a]
